By MARY LOUISE MILLER / StaffReporting from Washington, DCReuters – The U.S. Federal Trade Commission filed a complaint with the agency Thursday, saying that Amazon, which has struggled to turn a profit in recent years, has been selling its own online shopping mall on its website.
The FTC filed a civil complaint against Amazon on behalf of consumers, saying the company has been making misleading claims to consumers that it sells directly on its site.
The complaint said that from September 2018 to June 2020, Amazon advertised that its online shopping portal would “offer thousands of products and services directly from Amazon.”
It did not disclose how many products and products it offered.
The retailer has been fighting for years to regain trust from consumers who say it has been misleading them about the services it provides.
The company is under pressure from investors to improve its online sales.
In January, the Wall Street Journal reported that Amazon is working on a new website for its own retail stores, but it did not say when it would be ready to debut.
Amazon declined to comment on the complaint.
